Wave Review 2026: The Best Free Accounting Software — Just Not for AI-First Teams
VerifiedWave Accounting review: genuinely free core accounting, invoicing, OCR receipts, and payroll add-ons for freelancers and micro-businesses — but thin AI, a limited GraphQL API, and no official MCP make it the least agent-ready of the big three.

Wave Review
Wave is the free accounting software that’s supposed to be a trap — and it isn’t. Most “free” accounting tiers are bait-and-switch shells, but Wave has shipped genuinely free, full-featured books since 2009 (owned by H&R Block since 2019) and serves 300,000+ small businesses. If you’re a freelancer or creator who needs invoices sent, expenses tracked, and books that won’t embarrass you at tax time, this is the smartest $0 you’ll ever spend. Just don’t come looking for an AI that runs your books — Wave is proudly low-tech where it matters.
What is Wave?
Wave is a web-based accounting and invoicing suite built for owners, not accountants: double-entry bookkeeping, bank and credit-card connections (via Plaid), invoicing and estimates, online payments, OCR receipt scanning, and a payroll add-on. Core accounting is free forever; Wave monetizes through payment fees and paid add-ons. It’s web-only — a mobile app for invoices, no desktop app.
Key Features
Free Core Accounting
Unlimited income/expense tracking, connected accounts, double-entry books, and P&L / balance-sheet / cash-flow reports at $0.
Invoicing & Payments
Invoicing and estimates with recurring billing and deposits, plus a “Pay now” button. Online payments: cards 2.9% + $0.60 (3.4% + $0.60 Amex), bank 1% ($1 min).
Receipt Scanning (OCR)
Snap a receipt and Wave extracts merchant, date, amount, and tax — with automatic categorization on paid plans.
Payroll & Advisors
Payroll add-on (US: $40/mo base + $6 per employee or contractor, with W-2/1099 and tax filing; Canada from $25/mo). Wave Advisors bookkeeping from $149/mo (US).
AI Features
Wave’s AI is thin, and there is no real AI bookkeeper here. You get exactly three things, all verified from official sources: Mave, an in-app support chatbot (not a financial assistant); automated transaction categorization that “learns from your choices” over time (Pro/Receipts plan only); and OCR receipt scanning. No natural-language querying, no AI forecasting, no AI-generated reports. Against QuickBooks’ AI assistant and Xero’s forecasts, it’s anemic.
AI Agent Integration
Wave has a real but limited developer story: a public GraphQL API (OAuth2, developer.waveapps.com) covering invoices, customers, and accounting transactions, plus official real-time webhooks for key events. The API is narrow next to QuickBooks or Xero, and there’s no official MCP server.
AI Ecosystem Integration
MCP Servers
- No official MCP server. Every “Wave accounting MCP” on GitHub is a community wrapper over Wave’s public GraphQL API — usable, but you own the maintenance risk.
OKF Bundles
- No OKF bundle found yet for Wave. A bundle covering freelancer invoicing and bookkeeping workflows would be valuable.
Agent Skills
- Hermes Agent / skills.sh / Claude: no dedicated Wave skills found on official sources. Community opportunity.
Agent Readiness Assessment
- API: ✅ (public GraphQL API, OAuth2 — limited scope)
- Webhooks: ✅ (official, real-time)
- MCP: ❌ (no official MCP server; community-only)
- OKF: ❌ (No bundle)
- Agent Skills: ❌ (No dedicated skills)
- Overall Score: 3/7
Wave earns API (+2) and webhooks (+1) — and stops there: no official MCP server, no bundles, no agent skills. Its GraphQL API is narrower than QuickBooks’ or Xero’s, so an AI-first team would build agent automation on community code.
Pricing
All verified from waveapps.com/pricing and support.waveapps.com (Oct 2026):
- Starter (core accounting): $0 — free forever.
- Wave Pro: $19/mo or $190/yr (multi-user, auto-categorization, unlimited receipts, discounted fees).
- Receipts add-on: $11/mo or $96/yr.
- Payroll: US full-access $40/mo base + $6 per active employee/contractor; Canada from $25/mo base.
- Wave Advisors bookkeeping: from $149/mo US / $199 CAD (scales with transaction volume).
- Payments: pay-as-you-go — cards 2.9% + $0.60 (Pro: $0 fee on first 10 transactions/mo), bank 1% ($1 min).
Who Should Use Wave?
- Freelancers, creators, and micro-businesses that want solid free accounting
- Anyone who just needs to get paid and stay tax-ready at $0
- Not for teams needing inventory, multi-currency, heavy automation, or an AI bookkeeper
Final Verdict
Pick Wave if you’re a freelancer or micro-business that wants solid free accounting and doesn’t need inventory, multi-currency, or heavy automation. Pick QuickBooks for deep features and real AI help; pick Xero for a strong API to build on. For AI-first teams, Wave is the least agent-ready of the big three: thin native AI, a limited GraphQL API, no official MCP. But if your budget is $0, Wave remains the best free deal in small-business accounting. Bottom line: the best free accounting software money can buy — just don’t expect it to be the smartest.
